Common causes of neck pain

  • Muscle spasm from prolonged sitting, looking down at a phone or computer

Serious causes of neck pain (Red Flags)

The following symptoms may indicate a more serious underlying condition. Consult immediately with your family doctor if you have any of these symptoms together with neck pain:

  • Fever
  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Fatigue
  • Change in mental state
  • Coordination issues like dizziness
  • Unexplained weight loss

What to do about a stiff neck

  • Rest. Two of the best forms of intervention are sleep and brief periods of avoidance of the aggravating exercise.
  • Heat & ice. Intermittent application of heat & ice can be helpful. Ice in acute pain (72 hours or less). Heat in chronic cases.
  • Low-impact aerobic exercise. Walking, light jogging, cycling.
  • Medication. Ibuprofen and acetaminophen are generally well tolerated and helpful in reducing symptoms. Speak to your doctor before taking any medication.
