5 Things to Do Before You Get Back Surgery

Back surgery should be a last resort. Before going under the knife, consider these conservative treatment options that have helped many patients find relief without surgery.

1. Wait

Many back problems improve on their own with time. Unless you have a serious condition requiring immediate attention, giving your body time to heal naturally is often the best first step.

2. Apply Ice or Heat

Ice therapy can help reduce inflammation in the first 48-72 hours after an injury. After that, heat therapy can help relax tight muscles and increase blood flow to promote healing.

3. Take Over-the-Counter Pain Relievers

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like ibuprofen can help manage pain and reduce inflammation while your body heals.

4. Stay Physically Active

While rest is important, too much bed rest can actually slow recovery. Gentle movement and light activity help maintain flexibility and prevent muscle weakness.

5. Stretch and Strengthen Gently

Working with a chiropractor or physical therapist to learn proper stretching and strengthening exercises can help support your spine and prevent future problems.
