How to treat a sprained ankle

Here’s some helpful advice from the Mayo Clinic about how to deal with a sprained ankle: “Treatment for a sprained ankle depends on the severity of the injury. Although self-care measures and over-the-counter pain medications may be all you need, a medical evaluation might be necessary to reveal how badly you’ve sprained your ankle and to determine the appropriate treatment.”

Call today to speak to one of our Physical Therapists (DPT) to discuss how you can self-manage your ankle injury, or if you need to have an evaluation. We’re here to get you back on your feet! Dr Sam Gude & Irshath Zackariya. 586-725-3100.

The Mayo Clinic continues: “For self-care of an ankle sprain, use the R.I.C.E. approach for the first two or three days:”

  • Rest.
  • Ice. 15-20 minutes of use to the point of numbness.
  • Compression. Using elastic bandaging.
  • Elevation. Lift the foot up above the level of your heart, lie back on a couch.
